CSA....Hip Hip Horay

We are very close to our first scheduled CSA share. June 7 is the big day (oh, and it is also #3 Daughter Tammy's 36th birthday). We are looking forward to both events HEHE

Some legistics for that day.

If you have not prepaid, make sure you have arranged a payment plan with us. What would be best for us is to pay for the upcoming months shares. If that is too much, we will take weekly payments.

Just let us know you plan.

This blog will be used as our weekly newsletter as well. When each share is recieved, we will have info. posted about what is in it, as well as what you can do with it (recipes). Sometimes there will be pictures, maybe even videos, for you to get a first hand look at the process of getting your food from farm to plate.

We hope to have a couple events throughout the year for our members to be involved in the farm if they so choose. We will post details as they are available.

Busy as Bees

We thought we had an enormous jump on the growing season, but with all the beautiful weather and no rain, the soil conditions are dry and the growth has slowed down so much that we are probably right on track of where things normally are for this time of year.

We have been very busy planting, mulching and weeding (the weeds grow just fine without rain). We have many of our crops up though, especially the greens. Potatoes have poked through, and peas are about a foot tall.

We finished lining the walls of our farm stand this past weekend, and are getting it ready to open for the season. We should at least have our seedlings for sale at our farm stand Memorial Day weekend.

Outside of our normal daily lives which involve many different things for each of us, we collectively are throwing a wedding for a family member next weekend, almost every detail DIY, including the food for 225 guests. All 8 daughters will be in town for this event, so it should be lots of fun too. It will, however, take a lot of our focus next week, so updates may be few and far between. I will try to send a quick email reminder out regarding our first week for CSA, but the facts are we are still planning for our first pickup to be Monday, June 7.....anytime from 4-7 is best. Looking forward to it, and to meeting some of you face to face :-)

Let The Planting Begin

We spent both mornings this weekend (early, before the bugs were hungriest) planting some crops at our Intervale Road Location. (Our other main production garden is on Tobey Road at Mom & Dad's house, and some of our herbs are grown on Upper Village Street daughter #1 Robin's....you did know there are really 8 of us, right HEHE)

Potatoes.......6 rows (125' each), about 10 different varieties (can anyone say French fingerlings)

Onions/Leeks/Garlic/Shallots/Scallions
Another 2 rows here (on top of the 3 rows and garlic crops already in existence at Tobey Road).

We do grow some standard varieties, but love different colors and heirloom varieties of things. Have you ever even seen purple scallions in the grocery store, or onions that look like this?
(2008 Crop)
They are gorgeous, and you will savor the difference in taste that different varieties, which small farms can grow, will bring.
We also seeded our first plantings of beets, carrots, rutabagas, and parsnips.

It was a productive couple mornings. As soon as things are up, the whole garden will need to be mulched. This will help keep the weeds down, but also keep the soil warm and moist.
There's always something to do.

In the Merry Merry Month of May

One of Mom's MANY flower gardens...couldn't resist showing off the beauty.

We are gearing up for a great month this May with more incredible weather.

We expect to see our peas pop out of the soil any minute, as well as spring lettuces.

You never really know what each season will bring, but if this weather keeps up, our first share may be better than anticipated.

Which brings me to a good point. We hope that all of you realize that if your share seems low one week, we will make it up another! We work with nature, and at some point there will be an abundance of something to make up for the week when there didn't seem to be as much. No worries, there are just no guarantees of what will come when :-)
